School District No. 73 offers many opportunities for students to learn languages by offering an excellent variety of additional language programs. Students benefit from exposure to a second (or additional) languages and engage in intercultural experiences.
The French Immersion context provides an opportunity for students who wish to develop a high level of proficiency in both official languages. The goal of the French Immersion program is for students to be functionally bilingual by the end of Grade 12. Students enrolled in French Immersion study the same BC curriculum as students in the English-language program with the language of instruction being French. Emphasis is placed on language acquisition through the curriculum. Entry to the French Immersion program is in Kindergarten or Grade 1.
All our elementary schools with Grade 5 and up offer Core French as per BC Ministry of Education guidelines. Several schools also offer Secwepemctsin (local Shuswap language) as an option. Many of our secondary schools also offer Spanish, German, Japanese, and Italian.
The language resource website offers resources for students, parents, and teachers, as well as professional learning opportunities for teachers and language-learning links.
