On March 19th 2010, educators from School District 73, members of the First Nations Education Council, Elders, School Trustees, and community members met to begin discussions for the development of our next Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement.
The session was organized by Dr. Renee Spence and Deb Draney and led by Nathan Matthew, Council Chair. Elders Mona Jules, Mike Arnouse, Estella Moller, and Loretta Seymour provided the context of our history and our challenges. Mr. Matthew noted that this will be our Third Agreement, and while there remains differences in achievement, we have made gains or improvements. Our successes have come, and will come, from us working together and sharing the challenges.
Dr. Sullivan thanked Mr. Matthew for his outstanding leadership and support in helping our district and our Aboriginal communities work together. Looking ahead he stated “we must admit to our challenges, learn from those challenges, and move forward. Today is to renew our commitment to conquering those challenges so that we may have success for every Aboriginal student in our schools.”
Following the presentations of the speakers, groups were formed to look at the data related to the 10 goals of our present Agreement. The information gathered from those discussions will be taken back to the First Nations Education Council for review and consideration as the Council begins the development of our new Agreement.
