Career Connections

On January 23rd and 24th, students in Connections 9 at Valleyview Secondary individually presented their Capstone Projects to panels of family, staff, and community members as a way to showcase their learning and connect family and community networks to their school life. During the semester, "Who am I?" and "Who Might I be?" were questions to guide students towards personal exploration, as they identified their skills, interests, preferences and personalities and gathered information about careers from guest speakers, online resources, and workplace visits. Using reflection, personal awareness, and goal setting, students connected what they had learned about themselves to possible career paths or future steps in high school, resulting in a digital portfolio consisting of images and pieces of evidence. Students were responsible for choosing their panel members, sending out invitations and organizing times for presentation.

When asked what they thought about the Capstone project afterwards, students reported,

  • " It was really helpful for deciding my future careers."
  • "The project is good for helping us realize our strengths and weaknesses."
  • "I had a lot of fun with this project. It was a great opportunity to tell my own story and reflect on things that I never had before."
  • "I now think that it is a great way to show who I am, who I could be, and my learning. I have never done anything like this before so it was a great experience. I now feel more confident in my public speaking skills."
  • "After presenting it, I look back now and I see why we are doing this because we can show what we learned, Who we want to be, and what is important to us."
