Celebrating the Joy of Reading on DEAR Day!

Celebrating the Joy of Reading on DEAR Day!

School District No. 73 teacher-librarians coordinated a variety of literacy events leading up to the day including pajama day, decorate your door for DEAR, buddy reading activities and reading challenges. A number of special guests also visited schools promoting the act of reading including the Kamloops Blazers at Beattie McGill!

D.E.A.R began in 2007 when Surrey teacher-librarian Bonnie Chapman shared a literacy promotion idea at a professional learning conference. She along with her colleagues recognized the importance of promoting reading for pleasure. They understood the strong correlation between daily reading and reading achievement. In 2008 a number of teacher-librarians across the province including Karen Lindsay and Al Smith began preparations to launch a province-wide literacy promotion event. D.E.A.R continues to grow in our district, in British Columbia and on a national level. Check out the BC Teacher-Librarian Association website for more information about DEAR.
