Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals. (Edutopia, 2008).  Information, Media and Technology skills are one of the critical foundation pieces of the Framework for 21st Century Learning (http://www.p21.org).

The District Technology Coordinator can help you find ways to engage and motivate your students in their learning activities by using a variety of tools – many of them free! Technology provides us with powerful ways to help us inquire, brainstorm, communicate, collaborate, learn, represent, and assess when used in effectively designed lessons and units in K-12 schools.

Here are just a few ways that the District Technology Coordinator can offer support:

  • Planning lessons, units, and assessment strategies that involve the integration of technology linked to learning outcomes in any Ministry IRP at any grade level.
  • Modelling lessons.
  • One-on-one support with specific projects.
  • Small group, whole staff, or multiple staff pro-d work (after school, at staff meetings or on district pro-d days).
  • Sharing resources and information.

Topics can include, but are not limited to, SMARTboards and Notebook software, Interactive videoconferencing and collaboration projects, Google Apps, Web 2.0 tools, Cloud Computing, Moodle, Blogging, video recording/editing, iPads, and other mobile/tablet devices, and more!!!
