Young Artists

The Young Artists’ Conference is an annual event for aspiring artists in elementary school to showcase their artwork and take part in a series of workshops.  The school district has offered this unique opportunity to our students since 1987.

120 students, from grades 4 to 7, are selected to participate in the Young Artists Conference.  Each school has a selection committee which reviews a variety of 2-dimensional artwork submitted by students.  Based on a set of criteria, the selection committee would choose between 2 and 5 students to represent their school at the Artists’ Conference.

In recent years, the Conference has been held at Thompson Rivers University.  Students have an opportunity to choose from a variety of workshops and receive instruction from community artists.
Following is a sample list of the workshops:

  1. Mono-prints/Block prints - create patterns and prints in excitingly unique ways
  2. Zentangles - the art of doodling, an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns
  3. Pin-hole Photography - alternate perspectives and angles that may change your view of the world
  4. Artists Trading Cards - uniquely designed cards for framing or beginning a trading card album
  5. Modern Frescos - creative plaster fresco painting and antiquing
  6. The Art of Book-Making with Surprise!  twisting, turning, exploding flipping and popping - rainbow coloured, origami, triangle-turning, exploding, pop-up books and ore!
  7. Stained Glass Lanterns  - Inspirational designing of effects on Chinese paper lanterns
  8. T-Shirt Painting -  express yourself in a personally designed and created t-shirt
  9. Glass Mosaics - create a piece of 'forever' art using glass as a medium
  10. Art and Technology - using technology in design: digital art, computer animation, graphic design

Following the Conference, an Art Show is held to showcase student artwork.  The pieces are displayed for the public and a reception for the young artists and their parents is held on the last evening of the show.   Several of the wonderful pieces of artwork are selected to be framed and displayed at our School Board Office for the period of one year.
