Bill 22 – the Education Improvement Act, was passed in the B.C. Legislature on March 15th, imposing a cooling off period and suspending the teachers’ union strike action while calling on the assistance of a mediator. The legislation did not impose a new contract but extended the previous collective agreement to cover the mediation period.
On March 28th, Dr. Charles Jago was appointed to mediate contract talks between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the BC Public School Employers’ Association. Dr. Jago is the former president of the University of Northern British Columbia.
Dr. Jago’s role is to help the parties reach a negotiated agreement by the beginning of summer. If there s no agreement, then he will issue a report by June 30, 2012 with non-binding recommendations.
